The data gap: Fighting the algorithmic Goliath from the East

Today we are no longer facing confused individuals sharing errors. We are facing a massive and lucrative war industry of lies. Our information space is being systematically and methodically bombarded. Exact data analyses prove that in just one small country, the Czech Republic, 64 highly active pro-Russian websites produced an incredible 197,177 deceptive articles in the past year. Furthermore, the outdated model of physical troll farms is being rapidly replaced by autonomous AI systems. These systems generate disinformation in any language almost flawlessly. They do not know fatigue and can deceive even the most cautious readers. The threat is even more serious because commercially available AI models often uncritically adopt these lies from the infected internet and present them to users as verified facts.

The result of this massive offensive is that a staggering 24% of citizens share unverified information. They do so in the belief that mainstream media is intentionally hiding the truth from them.

Meanwhile, traditional public and independent media, our existing societal shield, face existential threats. The advertising market is collapsing and there are efforts to link their funding directly to the state budget. Such a move would completely destroy their independence.

The Patron Journal project responds to this extreme asymmetry. We create opinion pieces, reports, and analyses. We want to move toward podcasts and video formats so we can reach people from whom facts are hidden behind the walls of social media algorithms.

However, it is impossible to face overwhelming algorithmic superiority empty-handed.

A huge percentage of profits is siphoned off by tech giants, and journalists are often forced to work in precarious conditions under immense pressure. If your work touches the interests of the powerful, you face real risks. These range from targeted and sophisticated cyberattacks to systematic physical threats and devastating SLAPP lawsuits. The sole aim of these legal attacks is to financially exhaust, intimidate, and forever silence reporters.

We write under pseudonyms as a necessary and calculated tactical advantage. This allows us to maintain absolute freedom of publication in the face of dark structures. By doing so, we also want to honor your value as readers. The journalist is not the one who should be seen. The reports speak for them. We do not accept any state subsidies or money from corporate advertisers. Practice clearly shows that any financial dependence inevitably breeds self-censorship and the twisting of truth.
